ACRL Leadership DG: Collaborative and Distributed Leadership Across Disciplines: The MISHA Project (2025)

Recording from the December 2, 2025, ACRL Leadership Discussion Group: Collaborative and Distributed Leadership Across Disciplines: The MISHA Project, with speaker Juilee Decker. This presentation explores how innovation, collaboration, and leadership have shaped the development and adoption of Multispectral Imaging System for Historical Artifacts (MISHA)—a low-cost, low-barrier imaging system created at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for the documentation, preservation, access, and discovery of cultural heritage materials, including sheet, leaf, manuscript, and folia. Funded by an NEH R&D Grant (PR-268783-20), MISHA’s open-source system and software (https://www.rit.edu/chipr/misha) have fostered partnerships with libraries and archives across the United States and beyond. As a humanities scholar working within an interdisciplinary research lab that developed the MISHA Project, I highlight how imaging technologies—from high-resolution capture to spectral analysis—are one example of an innovation that pairs well with leadership and collaboration. While the MISHA system and its distribution have transformed the ways we can study, preserve, and interpret library and archival collections, the MISHA Project is also a case study of how collaborative and distributed leadership in imaging innovation, research, and collections can advance scholarship, support collections care and interpretation, and strengthen college and research libraries’ missions to serve scholars and the broader cultural heritage community.
